NCAA Football: Michigan-Spring Game

This past weekend I went out to Ann Arbor to photograph the Michigan Wolverines as the football team held their annual spring game at Michigan Stadium. The last time I was at the Big House it was snowing and about 50 degrees cooler, so I was delighted that this time was much warmer and sunnier. Here are some of the pictures from the nice sunny day out in Ann Arbor. Enjoy!

Air Force Academy at Michigan

I was recently blessed to be able to work with the United States Air Force Academy’s athletic department as the Air Force Falcons football team was visiting Ann Arbor to go up against the Michigan Wolverines at Michigan Stadium. I arrived in Ann Arbor six and a half hours early so that I could meet up with some family and a friend while they were tailgating before the game. After a few hours of tailgating, I headed over to the stadium with about three hours to go before game time. Once I got there I met up with the staff from USAFA. They asked me to shoot some wide images that would capture the Big House. I told them that I would give them a little bit of everything and at the end of the day they said they were happy with what I provided. That is always a good thing to hear!

After meeting with the USAFA staff I headed out to start taking some feature shots of the team warming up and preparing for the game.

A few minutes before the game started I made my way up into the stands to get a wide angle shot as well as to capture some action from above.

After spending the first quarter up in the stands, I made my way down to the field to get some game action before transmitting at halftime.

With a minute or so left in the game I headed to the Air Force side of the field and kept a close eye on the head coach Troy Calhoun, so that once the game was over I would be able to run and catch up with him before he shook hands with Michigan’s head coach Brady Hoke.

During the game I also wanted to focus on capturing members of the Air Force and the Air Force Academy.

Great time at the Great Lakes Invitational

I had the opportunity to photograph the the Great Lakes Invitational for Michigan Tech University. It was cool to be able to do it because a few years ago I went as a fan. When I was there as a fan I think I watched the photographers more than I did the games, but I learned a lot by watching them. For example, I never knew they used strobes up in the catwalk, which is kind of ironic because this was the first time I set up a remote in the catwalks. Tip: Don’t look down!

MTU would face Michigan State University in the first round. MTU was down 2-0 in the 3rd period but scored making it 2-1 Spartans. With minutes left they pulled their goalie and MSU was able to score and advance to the title game against Michigan.

In the battle for third place, MTU would face third ranked Boston College. It stayed close until the third period when the Eagles scored a goal making it 2-1 with minutes left. The Huskies didn’t give up, with less than 30 seconds left they scored making it 2-2, but the goal was called back due to high sticking. With the remaining seconds left MTU was unable to score and lost 2-1.

UNO at MSU

This past weekend I was blessed to be able to once again head over to Michigan State in East Lansing. This time I was working for the University of Nebraska-Omaha as they took on Tom Izzo and the Spartans. UNO is in it’s first year of Division I basketball and this was their biggest game yet. Here are a few images from the game and be sure to check out the gallery.

For the picture below I was able to get it by waiting for the players to enter the arena. The black background is from the darkness under the bleachers. I thought it made for a somewhat of a cool shot.

This past week was a crazy one at that. Super busy but that is a good thing for sure. I started off on Black Friday shooting for Utah Valley University as they faced Oakland University. More of those pictures here. The last three games were for US Presswire. The 2nd game was the Nashville Predators at the Detroit Red Wings. More of those pictures here. The 3rd game I went to Eastern Michigan in Ypsilanti. EMU was hosting Michigan State University. More of those pictures here. This past weekend I was fortune enough to photograph the final game of the 2011 Big Ten Men’s Soccer Championship at the University of Michigan. The Penn State Nittany Lions and the Northwestern Wildcats were the two teams competing for the title. It was a very enjoyable game, it was a very windy day but the rain stayed away until after the game! In the end though, the Wildcats came out on top.
