It has been a hard task to keep up with blogging while also going to school. As much as I want to get to it, school has to come first. Today though, I did want to share a recent event that I photographed for the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) as they came to Detroit. The event took place over an entire week, however I was just there for the last two days as ESPN was filming their shows. The actual event took place at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park, MI.
Photographing bowling can be a difficult task for many reasons. Most bowling alleys have very poor lighting, but luckily for me ESPN brought their own lights to light up the alley. Another obstacle is that as a photographer you are very limited on where you can take pictures. This is understandable, but I like to get a variety of shots and being creative can become that much harder. There is one exception though, as the bowlers are warming up the photographers are allowed to move around. During this time the backgrounds aren’t as clean but you are able to get a different perspective. Once the actual match starts the photographers are limited to shooting the bowlers head-on a few lanes over. Since bowling takes great concentration, photographers aren’t allowed to photograph until after the bowlers have released the ball. This means that most shots are shots of the bowlers reacting. With that said, I want to share a few shots from the two days I spent covering the Detroit Winter Swing. Enjoy!
During one of the practice rounds I wanted to look for a different angle. What I end up doing was using a slow shutter speed to get a different perspective of Bill O’Neill as he bowled.
Terrell Owens is the owner of the Dallas Strikers, he cheered his team on throughout the whole weekend.
